The Origin of the Wenchang Temple at the Fongyi Academy
The dedication of the Fongyi Academy to Wenchang Dijun (the God of Culture and Literature) and K’ueiHsing (the god of examinations) can be traced back to 1814.To re-create the original ritual, the Bureau of Cultural Affairs,on October 31, 2014,conducted a “dividing incense” (fen-siang) ceremony, transporting the incense from the Tainan Confucius Temple to the Academy. Symbolically, the Fongyi Academy thus inherits the cultural heritage of the first academy in Taiwan. Artists were also commissioned to create various statues: Wunchang Dijyun was made by Chen Jheng-hsiung; the shrine and the statue of K’uei Hsing were made by Ye Jing-yi; Zhu Xi was made by Su Yi-hsiung; and the mural on the shrine was by Pan Yue-hsiung.
Light of Wisdom
Wenchang Dijun, K'ueiHsing, and Zhu Xi were all worshipped in ancient China by scholars seeking wisdom, fame, and official rank. For our visitors, the Fongyi Academy's Wenchang Temple has designed the Light of Wisdom in the shape of a scroll and the entrance gate of the academy. For more information, please contact our staff.
