Imperial Examinations in Qing
Imperial Examinations in QingAlthough the imperial examination system was abolished at the end of the Qing dynasty, it has had a profound and lasting impact. Nowadays, examinations are still the method for university admissions and public service appointments in Taiwan. This room displayspast examination materials, small golden placards, and other items. It shows some examples ofthe “eight-legged essay” and gives you a sense of what staying in a gongyuan-haoshe (examination hall and designated accommodation) is like. A Shengguan Tu(a Monopoly-like board game) tells you the strenuous process through which one could achieve success and fame in the past.
