Restoration
The preservation of the Fongyi Academy is a unique case in the history of Taiwan’s heritage sites. The property was owned by the Ministry of Education’s Education Property Fund, but the site was leased out and was therefore occupied by tenants. The site was for a long time unrecognizable and could not be restored, and it was once earmarked for a road under an urban plan.Fortunately, after many years of hard work, the issues of property rights, tenants and urban planning were all resolved, and funding for the restoration was granted by the government. The restoration of the Academy eventually commenced in 2007. It started with demolishing what was not originally part of the Academy, followed by a thorough survey of the site, then scaffolding, and then further demolition and removal of illegal additions. The second stage of the restoration started in late 2009 and was completed in 2013.

The aim of the restoration was to restore the Academy to its original appearance. The process focused on the restoration of the historic complex and its surroundings. For wood parts, old timbers were retained or reused. Decorative carvings were mostly repaired following their original patterns. Painted parts were cleaned and repaired to bring out their original hues and appearances. The results of the restoration not only brought back the Academy but also became a model for future renovations of other historical sites. Now, the restored Fongyi Academy preserves cultural heritage and shows its original elegance. Also, with its modern facilities, it looks ahead. The Fongyi Academy will breathe new life into the historic site through continuing its mission of cultural preservation and providing a broader perspective on and vision for its cultural assets.
